Former Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars player Dan Shikanda and under 23 national coach Vince Ombiji have told the Football Kenya Federation not to enlist the services of a foreign coach to handle Harambee Stars.
Speaking separately in Busia on Friday, the two said no meaningful results will be achieved if a foreign coach will be appointed as Harambee Stars technical director.
Dr. Shikanda said a foreign coach should only be hired to build structures at the grassroots level and not to coach the national team lest we shall expect the same mediocre results.
” While other countries are taking soccer as an industry Kenya is taking it as a hobby. Players like Victor Wanyama don’t need a foreign coach. As a friend of Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, I will support him to build structures from grassroots to nurture talents that abound in the county. We need more Wanyamas in Busia,” he said.
Ombiji predicted that the next foreign coach for Harambee Stars will go away after a short stint. ” Take it to the bank. Such coaches are using Kenya as a conduit.
Local coaches have a history of taking Harambee Stars to the Africa Cup of Nations including Mohamed Kheri, Ghost Mulei, and James Siang’a feat that foreign coaches have failed to emulate,” he said.
Ombiji, the FKF instructor currently training Busia coaches said Kenya should start developing under-8 soccer team and maybe the dream of qualifying for the AFCON or World Cup after 16 years!
